What is an IP address?

Internet Protocol address. The address of a computer or Ethernet device attached to a TCP/IP network. Every computer and Ethernet device has a unique IP address. Workstations have either a permanent address (static IP address) or one that is dynamically assigned to them when booted (dynamic IP addresses). IP addresses are written in "dotted decimal" notation (four sets of numbers separated by periods). For example, 198.168.12.2.
