Capturing the Quake of August 23rd, 2011

On August 23^rd, 2011 an earthquake centered in the state of Virginia, at a depth of 3.7 miles, shook much of the Atlantic seaboard, New England and the Midwest. Felt as far West as Detroit, Michigan, the magnitude 5.4 quake registered atop the JW Marriott Hotel in Indianapolis, Indiana. An engineer, using accelerometers to monitoring building sway resulting from wind, inadvertently captured the quake using WinDaq data acquisition software.

The quake registered as high as 2.5 milli-g (one milli-g is one thousandth of the acceleration due to gravity) and lasted for approximately 30 seconds. It was felt by yours truly in Akron, Ohio as well.
