Description
The DI-2008XL is an Excel-oriented USB Thermocouple Data Acquisition system, featuring ExcelLink with WinDaq software for real-time data capture and streaming to Excel. It boasts 8 analog input channels programmable for thermocouples or voltage, with 16-bit resolution and a ±10mV to ±50V full-scale range. The channels support 8 thermocouple types and offer versatile measurement options.
Each analog input channel can be independently programmed for either thermocouple or voltage measurements. Voltage measurements offer twelve ranges from ±10 mV to ±50 V, with ±5 V supporting 4-20 mA measurements using a 250 Ω shunt resistor (model R250 sold separately). Thermocouple channels support eight types, with automatic linearization and junction compensation for values in °C or °F. The DI-2008XL includes a built-in 15 V sensor excitation power supply, reducing wiring complexity and overall system cost. All analog measurements benefit from a 16-bit ADC resolution for precise signal capture.
For common mode voltage challenges, the DI-2008XL provides electrical isolation for each analog input channel, ensuring safe and accurate measurements in the presence of up to 120 V rms common mode voltages.
The DI-2008XL also features 7 digital ports, configurable as inputs or switches, with 30 V input protection. Switched ports can control external loads up to 30 V @ 100 mA, allowing asynchronous control without interrupting the scanning process. Two ports offer dual functionality as discrete inputs or one as a counter and the other as a rate input, with a 50 kHz maximum measurement over twelve programmable ranges (10 Hz to 50 kHz full scale) for the rate input. The counter input provides 16-bit resolution and a terminal count value of 65,535. All digital inputs are synchronized with analog inputs, facilitating meaningful comparisons between analog and digital channels. For example, engine speed (rpm) data from the rate input can be acquired synchronously with analog data.
Trigger Excel Link
The DI-2008XL comes with WinDaq ExcelLink. It provides real-time conection to Excel spreadsheet (32- or 64-bit) and can stream data to Excel spreadsheet at high speed. Four trigger methods are provided - two-point window trigger, one-point slope trigger with pre- and post-trigger data, manual single row and block trigger, and programmable event driven single-row trigger.
Even though Excel can store over 1,000,000 rows of data, it is still a small buffer for high speed data aquisition unless trigger modes are utilized so that only data of interests is captured. ExcelLink supports advanced math to construct trigger methods. Window trigger can capture signals inside or outside a range. Slope trigger with pre- and post- trigger can capture signals before and after a predefined trigger point. Event trigger can capture a single row of data at the moment trigger conditions are met. Derivative trigger to trigger on rate of change, such as a glitch. Manual trigger can capture signals at operator's key instruction.
With data directly streaming to Excel, powerful real time analysis and many charting options are available, such as grouping multiple channels in a single chart.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I increase the accuracy of thermocouple readings?
To increase the accuracy of thermocouple reading, please follow this steps
Can I program it under Matlab in protocol level?
See our Matlab example on github.
Can I record 4-20mA sensor signals and if so, how do I do that?
4-20-mA process current signals can be measured with the DI-2008XL. See How to make 4-20mA current Loop Measurements for more information.
Can I connect and measure data from a single-ended sensor?
Yes. Single-ended sensors can be connected and measured. The best practice is to connect the ground wire to the negative input of the channel.
Can I measure Thermocouple temperatures?
The DI-2008 is specifically designed to measure and record thermcouple temperature measurements as well as voltage measurements.
Is the DI-2008XL Isolated?
Each DI-2008XL analog input is electrically isolated from other channels and from ground for safe and accurate measurements in the presence of common mode voltages. Channel isolation means that each analog input is free to float to an independent common mode voltage imposed upon it by the signal source up to 120 V rms, and still provide an accurate and noise-free measurement.
Is software included with the device?
WinDaq Data Acquisition and Playback Software is included free. ExcelLink is also included with DI-2008XL
Where do I download the software?
Download ExcelLink at https://dataq.com/support/downloads/WinDaq-Acquisition-Add-ons-Setup.exe.
Download WinDaq at https://www.dataq.com/support/downloads/DATAQ-Software-Suite-Web-Setup.exe.
Does the DI-2008XL include a calibration certificate?
All new DI-2008XL instruments ship with an NIST-traceable calibration certificate.
Can I get the DI-2008 re-calibrated?
Recalibration service is available and can be ordered online.
How often should I get the DI-2008 re-calibrated?
The DI-2008 should be re-calibrated annually.
Can I program this device in Python, C#, or .NET?
The published protocol of the DI-2008 is available for programming in any language. View our GitHub page for example programs.
Is my sensor compatible with this device?
Maybe. The many gain factors and voltage ranges available on the DI-2008 allow for many sensors to be compatible with the device. See how fine a measurement you can make with your sensor using the ADC Resolution Calculator. If you have any questions about compatibility just send your sensor information to our sales team at sales@dataq.com.
Does the DI-2008 include digital or analog output channels?
The DI-2008 has seven bi-directional digital ports.
My sensor requires a power source, can the DI-2008 provide that power?
Yes. The DI-2008 can provide +15V power by connecting the appropriate wire to the +15V pin. Be sure your sensor does not exceed the excitation output spec: +15 V dc (-7.5% to +2.5%) at 70% load (47 mA), 67 mA at full load.
